Melanerpes uropygialis Found across the Sonoran Desert, this tan-headed woodpecker drills into saguaros for nesting. Its rolling calls and black-and-white barred back make it easy to recognize.

The Western Bluebird is a small, plump thrush with a bright blue back and a rusty-colored breast on males; females are duller and more grayish. These birds are about 6 to 8 inches long and have a large, rounded head with a short bill. Their diet consists mainly of insects and fruits, and their song is a series of sweet, mellow whistles.
